How-to guide for Wordpress

Most of our websites are built using the WordPress platform. Upon request we’re able to make it so clients can update their own website with new information. This information may be company news, special offers or products.

The below steps are based on using the website on desktop.

In this article we will be covering:

  • Adding a post to your website (including uploading an image)
  • Editing an existing post

Adding a post (or product) to your website

If you’re interested in updating your website but do not know if you can currently, please keep in mind this does need to be developed and isn’t a “standard feature” we include by default in our websites.

Step 1

Log into your website. This is usually accessible by adding “/login” to the end of your website URL. E.g. “examplewebsite.co.uk/login”. If you have misplaced your login details, please get in touch and one of our team will reset them.

Step 2

Hover over the “+ New” at the top of the page after you login. An option should appear that says “Post”, which you need to select. If your website is made for adding products, you’ll need to select “Product” (or similar).

If your website was designed for other content, the option may show something else such “Property”, “Tool”, “Special Offer”, “Stock”, etc.

Step 3

Fill out all the details on the page for your post, product, etc.

All websites will contain the following fields which you’ll need to complete:

If you’re writing a post, the title should be something catchy to entice the readers attention. If you’re adding a product, the title will be the name of your product.

The Content

Underneath the title there’s a section that says “Start writing or type / to choose a block”. This is where you need to write your article, provide a product description, etc.

If you want to add an image, press the + button in the content section. A popup will appear with a search box that says “Search for a block”. In that search field look for “Image”. Click the image option, and then within the image box that appears select “Upload” to upload your image.

Adding an Image on WordPress

Featured Image

The featured image is the image that most represents the article or product. This tab is on the right hand side of the screen, which you need to open and click “Set featured image” to upload your image. The featured image may be used in your blog or online store, and will appear when people share the content on social media.

Other fields to fill out/select

Other fields may require filling out. For example, your post/product may have “Categories” that require selecting.

You may want to add a description to the “Excerpt” box to provide a summary of the content when it appears on the News or Shop (for example) section of the website.

If we created a bespoke solution for your website, there may be more forms to fill out. This may include a “Price”, “Location”, etc. If you have trouble with these sections let us know for advice.

Step 4

At the top of the page, hit the “Publish” button for your content to go live on the website. Make sure you check your content before it goes live.

Editing your posts or products

We do not recommend deleting content, and instead recommend editing the content to state that the information is outdated (providing the newest information) or writing if it’s sold out in the title. If you delete old content, Google will potentially penalise your website as they believe it is negative to their user experience.

Step 1

After logging in, click on “Posts” (or “Products”, etc). You should see a list of content on this page. Hover over the post you’re looking to edit and you’ll have a few options come up: “Edit | Quick Edit | Trash | Preview”.

Quick edit will allow you to edit the Title, the date of that post, the categories and tags of that post.

To edit the content press “Edit”.

Step 2

Once on the content it should be pretty self-explanatory how to edit content.

If you want to edit any text, simply click the text you’re looking to edit.

If you’re looking to remove content click on the content you’re looking to remove, and a bar should appear above the content. You’ll want to select on the 3 dots there, and then click “Remove block” at the bottom of the dropdown that appears.
